Functional foods in pet nutrition: Focus on dogs and cats

More and more attention has been paid to what goes into pet food, especially when it comes to ingredients that do more than just fill a bowl.

Certain additives like green-lipped mussel, glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, antioxidants, and probiotics are being used not just for nutrition, but to actively support pet health. These compounds have been linked to better joint mobility, reduced inflammation, stronger immune systems, and even improved digestive function in dogs and cats. While research is still growing, many of these ingredients are already showing positive effects in managing common conditions like arthritis and digestive issues.

Using functional foods to support pet health, specifically increasing the use of health-boosting ingredients in pet food (like glucosamine, probiotics, etc.) is part of taking a more proactive, nutrition-focused approach to animal care. A shift in thinking, where food isn’t just seen as fuel, but as a way to prevent and manage health issues in pets
